Volunteer with First City Sunrise

The shelter is volunteer-powered. Every shift covered and every meal shared keeps the doors open for a neighbor who needs them.

Volunteer agreement

Every volunteer accepts a liability waiver and agrees to keep what they see and hear at the shelter confidential. Read the full volunteer agreement (opens in a new tab).

Our volunteer agreement is being finalized with our attorney, so there is nothing to sign yet. Send this application now and we will bring you the agreement to sign before your first shift.

Volunteer questions

Do I need experience to volunteer?

No experience is needed for most roles. Kindness and reliability matter most. We'll show you everything else.

Can my church, business, or club volunteer together?

Yes, when your group is providing the meal. Choose “Prepare or donate a meal” or the evening shift on the form and the group option appears. Other shifts are signed up for individually so we can keep the number of people on site comfortable for our guests.

How do meal donations work?

Contact Heather Mallet at (812) 840-0455 to pick a date. We'll help you plan portions for the evening's guests.
